Rockingham Rangers Camp 1835
Confederate Trivia
Lt Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest CSA had 30 horses shot from under him during the war.
After the Union's young general George Custer executed six of  Col. John S.  Mosby's raiders, the confederate
responded in kind.  Col Mosby executed seven of Custer's men and left a note on one the bodies pointing out that all
future captives would be treated normally, as prisoners of war, unless Custer committed some new atrocity.  That was
the end of executions

Historical note - President Jefferson Davis's General Order in April, 1865, offered freedom to slaves who would
volunteer for military service, and we like to think that it  was this nation's first real emancipation proclamation, since
Lincoln's of 1862 freed no slaves at the time, nor was it intended to.  But a little known fact of history is that neither of
these was the first official to issue freedom to slaves in our nation's history.     It was General George Washington.   He
accepted black troops into his Continental army, both freemen and slaves, offering the slaves their freedom for
serving.  A regiment of black troops was made up - the First Rhode Island - and they distinguished themselves during
the Battle of Newport.
Odd Civil War History:
On October 19th, 1864 Confederate Guerillas raided the Vermont town of St. Alban. This action later know n as the “St.
Alban’s Raid”, was the northernmost engagement of the Civil War. It was led by Lieutenant Bennett Young who
swooped down from Canada with a handful of men. When the men entered the town, Lieutenant Young stood on the
step of a local hotel and yelled, “ This city is now in the possession of the Confederate States of America!”
The men led by Young would raid three banks and attempt to burn down the town. Although the destruction of the town
was not successful, they did manage to get 200,000 dollars and a bank teller to swear allegiance to the CSA…
MYTH - The Confederate Battle Flag is known as the "Stars & Bars".
FACT - A common misconception. The First National Confederate Flag is correctly known as the
"Stars & Bars". The Confederate Battle Flag is known as the "Southern Cross".
MYTH - The United States Flag represented freedom.
FACT - No chance. The US flag flew over a slave nation for over 85 years! The North tolerated slavery and
acknowledged it as a Division Of Labor. The North made a vast fortune on slavery and it's commodities. It wasn't until
the South decided to leave the Union that the North objected. The North knew it could not survive without the Southern
money. That is the true definition of hypocrisy.
